Our evening will start at 5 pm with a performance by Debra Ann Miller as she portrays Jane Austen in a visit from the autumn of 1815.  Drawing from her letters, juvenilia and novels, she will delve into Jane’s personal life speaking about her childhood in Steventon, her brothers, beloved sister Cassandra, and her writing.

Debra Ann Miller is a professional actress, vocalist and voice-over talent with over 30 years of experience as a performer for live audiences, television and film. In 2010, she began creating her own company focused on writing and producing one-woman plays in which she portrays important historical figures such as authors Jane Austen, Louisa May Alcott, Dolley Madison, and Elizabeth Barrett Browning, as well as a one woman performance as Mary Todd Lincoln.   In addition to still working in the Chicago Theatres, Debra won Best Actress in the 2004 Chicago Indiefest for her performance in her first film, Zen Noir.

After the performance, we’ll feast on a sumptuous dinner.  You may be assured, to paraphrase Miss Austen,  of being in the best company of clever, well-informed people, who have a great deal of conversation!

At 7:30, we’ll move into the ballroom for our Masquerade Ball.  Beginners are always welcome as Allison Thompson will teach and call all dances to the delightful live music of Amarallis.

Replenish your strength midway through the ball with a dessert buffet.   Dancing will continue until 11:00 pm, at which time you must be like Northanger Abbey’s Isabella and with sniffles of most exquisite misery, and the laughing eye of utter despondency, you must bid your friends adieu…

What to wear and other details

On Twelfth Night we had a delightful evening…about our dress King and Queen, W Morris was King, I was Queen … Soon After, according to a preconstructed plan, some of us retired upstairs to dress Jane as Punch’s wife, in a witches hat, a green petticoat and a scarlet shawl (the remains of our last year’s masquerade)
Fanny Austen to Miss Dorothy Clapman February, 1812

As this is a masquerade set during the Regency (1811–1820),  you are encouraged to wear any costume set in or before this time period.  As you are our treasured guests, and we want you to be comfortable, you do not have to dress in period clothing.  Unlike Lady de Bourgh, we will not condescend, just wear whatever makes you feel the most festive.  But by all means – comfortable shoes!
